A venue for the whole family, this award winning museum contains six galleries representing over 200 million years of Dorset’s past. Adults and children of all ages will find a wealth of interesting and fascinating displays to stimulate and inform.

Proving very popular with visitors are the new Ancient Dorset Gallery and the Jurassic Coast Gallery. Set out in a tableau form, the Ancient Dorset Gallery displays the lives and artefacts of the different peoples who lived along the South Dorset Ridgeway. Starting with the Ancient Britons, the Romans, Saxons and Vikings all lived and died in and around the Ridgeway. The displays show the wonderful jewellery, coins and pottery these peoples left. The Roman legacy is with the wonderful mosaics that are on the floor and walls of the museum.

One of the highlights of the Jurassic Coast Gallery is the incredible jaw and skull of a pliosaur. It has the title of the ‘World’s biggest bite’. This many other fossils from the Museum’s collection will impress the children.

The four other galleries feature Dorset life, its agricultural history and the famous writers who have captured the essence of living and working in Dorset. The most famous being Thomas Hardy whose study at Max gate has been reconstructed in a room in the Museum.

For refreshment the Museum has its own tea room and gift shop where visitors can relax and enjoy a pot of tea or coffee and browse the gift shop for unique gifts.
