Pumpkin Picking in Dorset

When autumn arrives, Dorset transforms into a picture-perfect countryside filled with crisp air, golden leaves, and of course – pumpkins! Whether you’re looking for the perfect pumpkin to carve, cook, or simply snap some seasonal photos with, pumpkin picking in Dorset has become a must-do family tradition.

With charming pick-your-own farms packed with activities, there are a number of places to explore across the county.

Why Go Pumpkin Picking in Dorset?

  • Family fun: A great outdoor activity for all ages – from toddlers to teens.

  • Fresh pumpkins: Straight from the field, fresher and supporting local businesses and farms.

  • Photo opportunities: Perfect for autumn family photos or Instagram-worthy pumpkin patch snaps.

  • Local events: Many farms in Dorset offer more than just pumpkins – think maize maze, storytelling, Halloween trails, and seasonal treats.

Gorcombe Farm – Blandford

  • Expect plenty of variety here – from vibrant orange pumpkins to unusual colours and shapes, though you’ll need to be quick to snap up the biggest ones.
  • Entry is free (though buying a pumpkin or two helps support the farm), and you can say hello to the friendly goats as you wander the field, with lots of photo spots along the way.
  • After picking, refuel at The Happy Farmer Café, open seven days a week and serving everything from hearty all-day breakfasts to irresistible homemade cakes (delicious, if not very diet-friendly!).
  • They’re also hoping to host a Halloween party (date to be confirmed) complete with atmospheric lighting and surprises hidden in the pumpkin field.
  • Pumpkin picking dates: 1–31 October, 9 am–4 pm

Tips for a Great Pumpkin Picking Day Out

  • Wear wellies: Dorset fields can get muddy in October.

  • Bring cash: Some smaller farms may not take card payments.

  • Book in advance: Many events require pre-booked tickets.

  • Go early: The best get picked first!

  • Don’t forget a wheelbarrow or bag, some farms provide these: Pumpkins can be heavier than they look.
