Wild Partridge Farm Shop, Owermoigne. The Dorset Farm Shop Worth Going Out of Your Way For
Hands up if you love supporting local! Whether you're a Dorset local or just visiting, you'll find some brilliant independent businesses here that are deeply rooted in their communities, seeking out local suppliers, championing local producers, and generally making the area a better place to eat and live.
The Wild Partridge Farm Shop on Wareham Road, Owermoigne, is a shining example of exactly that.
Owner Laura Partridge admits she still pinches herself that she's running her own farm shop. What started as a small chilli jam venture, shifting over 600 jars in just three weeks, grew into a wonderfully well-stocked store bursting with fresh produce, mostly sourced from local farms, bakers and growers.
Let's talk about a few of the highlights:
Salad — Forget boring bags of limp leaves. The organic salad from local growers Derwen Farm, is something else entirely, mixed with fresh herbs and, in summer, edible flowers, your plate will taste as good as it looks. Healthy, beautiful and delicious, that's a hat-trick worth celebrating.
Bakery — The shop is lucky enough to be supplied by not one but two brilliant local bakers. Sgt Buns Bakery in Weymouth (an absolute institution) delivers freshly baked goods regularly, and on Saturdays you'll find the famous Oxford Bakery sourdough, whilst stocks last! Don't leave without trying their legendary doughnuts either. Arrive early. Trust us on this one.
Meat — Much of the meat comes from the local farm in Purbeck, and some of the sausages are made with Laura's own chilli jam. A chilli jam sausage sandwich? Yes please! It really doesn't get more farm-to-fork than this, and Laura and her friendly team are always happy to help you pick the best cuts for whatever you're cooking.
And that's just scratching the surface. The shelves at Wild Partridge are wonderfully loaded with all manner of good things, from a gorgeous cheese selection and freshly made sandwiches to take away, to local ales, ciders and wine. Market fresh vegetables and eggs sit alongside store cupboard staples, gluten free options and ready meals for those nights when you just need something brilliant with minimal effort. And then there are the treats, because every good farm shop deserves a proper treat section. Think sugar mice, chocolate, lardy cake, sweets and crackers, plus gifts and cards for when you need a little something for someone special. It's the kind of shop where you pop in for one thing and leave with a very happy bag full of goodies. Chatting with Laura, it's immediately clear this is a business with a genuine heart. She's not preachy about it, she simply loves great food and loves connecting people with the farmers and makers behind it. And there's something quietly satisfying about knowing exactly where your dinner came from.
When we popped in, Laura was completely in her element. We'd never met before, but within minutes it felt like chatting with someone we had known for years. She greeted every customer the same way, and that warmth says everything about why people keep coming back.
Whether you're a dedicated foodie or simply curious, Wild Partridge is well worth a visit. Your taste buds and your conscience will thank you.
