Nao Victoria Visits Weymouth

The Nao Victoria has arrived in Weymouth and will be open to the public from May 4th to 14th so that visitors can get to know her extraordinary story.

The Nao is an historical replica of the first ship that successfully circumnavigated the world commanded by Ferdinand Magellan and Juan Sebastián Elcano in the 16th century. Almost 500 years ago (1519- 1522), one of the greatest maritime adventures of all time was accomplished. One of the biggest acts of maritime history carried out by Spanish sailors who managed to sail all around the world and discovered the planet’s real dimensions. One of the 243 members of the crew of the expedition was an English man: Maestre Andrés, born in Bristol. He was serving as lombardero (artillery soldier) and died in the Philippine islands during the expedition, on May 9th, 1521.

By visiting Weymouth this emblematic vessel puts the town on the vast map of ports all around the world that she has already visited since her construction. Between 2004 and 2006 she made her own particular journey around the world, stopping in 17 countries and visiting the United States. She is already making a tour of several European ports by visiting some of the ports in England (London, Portsmouth, Cowes, Brixham, Poole), France, Holland, Germany and Belgium, becoming the first ship of her kind to have performed similar voyages.

The Nao will be open to public in Weymouth Harbour between 4th and 14th May. During the visit to this 27-meters-long and 7-meters-wide wooden vessel –a masterpiece of Spanish marine carpentry, visitors will get to know the ship’s amazing history, forms, details, operation and the life of Spanish seamen. In the hold they also get to experience the real life of the crew members who still travel the world on board this unique ship.

The Nao Victoria offers the opportunity to sail on board during her next voyage to Poole next May 15th. People who wants to feel the experience to sail in this replica of the 16th century vessels and live the adventure with the crew, can sail on board this day as a trainee (for further information contact: sole@fundacionnaovictoria.org)
