Ever wondered what it takes to become a metal detectorist? Join Karen Brown, Keith Brown, and Brian Read to explore every aspect of the hobby. From understanding the Treasure Act and legal requirements to finding the right permissions, contracts, and insurance – this colourful and informative presentation covers everything you need to know before taking up metal detecting.

You’ll also have the opportunity to discuss equipment with Keith Brown and examine artefacts identified by Brian Read, giving you practical insights into what you might discover.

Following the talk, Brian Read – finder of the Piddletrenthide Hoard – will share over 30 original artefacts in a free drop-in activity between 2:30pm and 4:30pm.

About Karen Brown
Karen studied archaeology at Yeovil College, and after taking an active part in local archaeological societies took up metal detecting. She is now the chairman of Weymouth and Portland Metal Detecting Club. Her ambition has been to add to the knowledge of our local area, and promote responsible detecting; recovering, conserving and recording metal finds.

About Brian Read
Since 1979 metal-detecting and its associated study of small metal artefacture has been Brian’s primary leisure interest. Brian is currently working on a new book for Greenlight Publishing – Brooches from the Bronze Age until the early post-medieval period.
