The Vikings are Coming!

When? 03 Aug 2024 to 04 Aug 2024
Where? Abbotsbury

  • The Vikings are Coming!

To celebrate the 1,000th anniversary of the gift of the land and buildings of Abbotsbury and Portesham by King Canute to his manservant, Orc, the Friends of St. Nicholas in Abbotsbury are delighted to invite the Viking Re-enactment Society to stage the re-enactment of a Viking raid on our peaceful Saxon settlement.
We are expecting approximately 60 -70 re-enactors, including hand-to-hand warriors and archers.
On each day over the weekend there will be a small skirmish around 12 Noon, followed by a pitched battle at 4pm.
Between these times, visitors will be able to visit a "Living History" Saxon encampment, talk to the re-enactors about the way-of-life ca. 1,000 years ago and observe cooking practices and weapons of war! Viking Re-enactment Society is certified by the Department of Education for Key Stage 2 History education.
There will be an active Trading Post where you will able to buy authentic Viking/Saxon clothing, jewelry and beads. In addition, local crafts people will selling pottery, metalwork, glasswear, authentic food and drink (including suckling pig and mead), silverware, scented candles, reed diffusers, hand stitched leather (belts & bags).
Lots of hot & cold food and drink on offer during the day.
