Concert and Readings: I, Clara

When? 31 August 2024
Where? Mapperton House and Gardens - Beaminster

  • Concert and Readings: I, Clara

I, Clara, is music and words telling the story of the wonderfully gifted musician Clara Schumann, 1819-1896. I, Clara, is drawn from letters and diaries, created by Lucy Parham, and mixed with piano performances of her works and those of Robert Schumann, Brahms, Liszt, Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn and Chopin.

Clara Schumann, a child prodigy, an exceptional pianist and composer, was a ground-breaking musician, not just devoted wife to composer Robert Schumann. Over 60 years she gave more than 1,500 concerts and created the form of piano recital we use today. Marrying Robert against her father’s wishes, she produced eight children, and when her husband became mentally ill, she ran everything, supporting the family with her international concerts.

Clara championed the works of her husband Robert, and of Chopin, Mendelssohn, Brahms and others. She produced a range of piano music including a concerto, solo piano works, chamber music and songs. Brahms was particularly devoted to her.
