Victorian Family Weekend

When? 18 Jul 2020 to 19 Jul 2020
Where? Weymouth

  • Victorian Family Weekend

The 'Ragged Victorians – ‘The Great Unwashed' are an award-winning living history group, re-enacting the lower classes of Victorian England, c1851.

They will be taking up residence in the Nothe Fort over the weekend, where they will be ‘living’ in the tunnels and cellars under the Fort. This is the second time they have been to the Nothe and they proved to be a major attraction.

The "Ragged Victorians" offer a variety of characters and skills, that include street history at general events and fayres, educational talks and living history at historic sites.

Back in the day when a shilling was a week’s wage, when even 'Pure' (Dogs Dung) was a valuable source of income, low class Victorians were living by whatever means they could. With no homes, no income and no benefit system for support, an honest day’s work could mean labouring the most degrading jobs in the world, for little or scant reward.

The Nothe Fort Victorian Artillery will be in attendance, firing their Victorian Cannons and muskets. The Victorian school room will be open to send your children for a taste of strict discipline of the time. There will be period music and stallholders attending.

The event promises to be a great day out for all the family with plenty of entertainment on offer for our Victorian showpiece. This is an event for local people and visitors to the town during this period. All this entertainment for normal admission prices and annual passes will be accepted.

It is often spent with family and friends, the ones who have been by our side for last 12 months, and the ones we look to spend the next 12 months with. For many of us, a change is about to happen. We step into the New Year with a fresh vision of exciting things to come. Whatever you’re ... Read more...
