Wessex Military Band Concert
Bridport
From its humble beginnings as a youth band in 1981, the Wessex Military Band has grown into a vibrant and cherished part of the South West’s musical landscape.
In 1990, the band was invited by the British Army to become the Voluntary Band of the Army Air Corps, based at Middle Wallop near Andover. At the time, the Corps did not have its own regimental band, and this collaboration filled that gap with pride and professionalism. Although the Army disbanded its volunteer band system in 1993, the spirit and dedication of the musicians endured – and so, the Wessex Military Band was born.
Thanks to the Ministry of Defence’s support, the band reformed under its new name and proudly adopted the emblem of the recently decommissioned Wessex Regiment, featuring the iconic Wyvern.
Since 2022 the band has been going from strength to strength, performing regularly in open-air venues and continues its tradition of monthly concerts at Bucky Doo Square — a firm favourite with both locals and visitors.
