Things to do when it's sunny in Dorset
27 February 2020
In Dorset, we thrive under blue skies and sunny weather – you just can’t beat it. With 88 miles’ of coastline (much of which is part of the Jurassic Coast), gorgeous countryside areas and bustling towns, there’s so much to see and do.
Whether relaxing at one of Dorset’s glistening harboursides, visiting attractions at the pier at Bournemouth or Boscombe, trekking through the countryside, or exploring castles, gardens and much, much more, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Let’s get into it:
Explore the Jurassic Coast
The Jurassic Coast really is one of Dorset’s key attractions. From famous landmarks (we’re looking at you, Durdle Door) to hidden gems, there’s a beauty spot wherever you are on the coast. A trip to Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove is often a firm favourite, or maybe try a spot of fossil hunting at Lyme Regis or Charmouth to uncover up to 185 million years’ of history. If you’re looking for a spot that’s a bit quieter, secluded bays such as the one at Kimmeridge are always on offer, or find a spot at Chesil Beach for panoramic coastal views.
Relax by the Harbourside
Grab a bite to eat or drink at Weymouth Harbour, Poole Harbour or West Bay Harbour and prepare to sit and watch the world go by—it all makes for a glorious day in the sun. If you’re in the delightful Poole Quay area, we highly recommend stopping at Deli on the Quay for food and drink, and in Weymouth we love Bennett’s and Marlboro for fish and chips. For a sweet kick, head to Boho Gelato for some delicious ice cream!
Put yourself to the test with a variety of Watersports
Head to iCoast, a useful resource for all things coastal activities in Dorset. There is a wide variety of water sports to discover, with lots of relevant information on each sport, how to stay safe, and where you can get involved. Maybe try something new – how about an exhilarating jet-ski ride, or a relaxing day out on a paddleboard?
Pub Walks
There’s not much that can beat walking through the picturesque countryside or along the coast before stopping at a pub for a drink and something to eat. This is an activity that brings your family together, or similarly, a great opportunity to spend some quality time with your friends. It tends to be a weekend tradition for many in the UK, and Dorset is certainly inviting when you’re looking for a good ol’ pub walk. Admire Gardens and Architecture
When the sun is shining, it brightens up the wonderful architecture and gardens of places like Mapperton House & Gardens, Sherborne Castle, Highcliffe Castle, and Lulworth Castle & Park. Offering a relaxing day out, you can wander and admire the beauty of these places for hours, as you explore their history. And with on-site cafés or tearooms, you can stop for that well-earned cuppa and slice of cake.

Visit the World’s Only Managed Colony of Nesting Mute Swans
Abbotsbury Swannery is a place like no other—it’s the only managed colony of nesting mute swans in the world! You can easily spend a day there mingling with the swans, and even get involved with their mass feeding at 12 noon and 4pm every day. It’s a great attraction with lots to offer, especially on a nice day.

For a whole world of other animals, visit one of Dorset’s farm attractions
Horses, cows, sheep, piglets and much, much more are waiting for you to pay them a visit at a variety of farm parks across Dorset. It’s a great opportunity to spend time outside and bond with our farm-based friends. We recommend Abbotsbury Children’s Farm, Dorset Heavy Horse Farm Park, Vurlands Animal Farm & Tea Rooms, Honeybrook Adventure Farm and Farmer Palmer’s – take your pick!

Take a trip to the Pier at Bournemouth or Boscombe
Bournemouth and Boscombe are bustling with shops, attractions and places to eat and drink, but there’s no denying that the the pier at both places really hits the sweet spot, too. As well as enjoying the views, at Bournemouth Pier you have Rockreef, where you can zip-wire down the pier and onto the beach; and Oceanarium, Bournemouth’s very own aquarium. The pier at Boscombe is a little quieter if you want to escape the crowds, and Urban Reef is a brilliant spot for some food and drink with beachside views.
